An overview of menopause, and the conventional and alternative therapy currently being offered to women in menopause, is presented. A list of oestradiol-containing drugs derived from natural sources (soyabeans and wild yams) is given. Herbs used for alleviating menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, pain and irritability include Cimicifuga racemosa and Angelica sinensis roots, and chastetree (Vitex agnus-castus) fruits. Red clover (Trifolium pratense) contains substances that act as weak oestrogen in the human body and is also used for menopausal symptoms. Herbal remedies for menstrual flooding and irregularities during menopause include chastetree fruits and shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris). For emotional disturbances during menopause, Ginkgo biloba leaves, ginseng Panax ginseng root, Hypericum perforatum and Piper methysticum are used. Ginseng is also used for vaginal dryness during menopause. Herbs used for reducing high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, which may cause heart diseases in women taking oestrogen medication, include Commiphora mukul, garlic and red yeast rice (Monascus purpureus). Doses and preparations of the medicinal plants used for therapy are presented.
