To enhance gender-sensitive water policy and planning in Egypt, gender issues have been addressed within a ministry framework through different activities and analyses at field and institutional levels. The general outcome of the case studies showed that men and women are involved in irrigation and agriculture. Female farmers contribute relatively more labour than control of water resources and decision-making. The study recommended: (i) to encourage and promote women's participation in water management and water users organisations; (ii) to assign more female irrigation and drainage engineers to communicate with female farmers in the field; (iii) to incorporate gender policy into institutional mandate.
