Tourism is a major source of foreign exchange in India, amounting to around $1000 million per year, and could play an important role in solving the country's balance of payments problem. The last 10 years have seen a growing interest in various adventure activities in the form of outdoor sports, mountaineering, wildlife watching, trekking, camping, whitewater rafting, car rallies, heli-skiing, angling and other pursuits, and the potential for further growth in this field of adventure tourism is enormous. The article looks at the broad range of opportunities available, assesses adventure tourism's development potential and considers briefly the negative environmental impacts.
