A letter responds to an article by Vogel in the December 1, 2000, issue concerning the use of human embryonic stem (ES) cells for therapy. The writers contend that a Geron researcher's claim that a single human ES cell might be modified in the laboratory to provide an unlimited supply of cells for therapy is inconsistent with the nature of evolution of stem cells and thus seems unlikely to be true.
