German parliament agrees on limits to bioethics inquiry

The German parliament has ended 18 months of controversy by deciding to create an all-parliamentary commission of inquiry on the legal and ethical aspects of biomedical medicine. Biotechnology-friendly politicians had feared that such a commission would delay legislation to bring regulation of German biomedicine in line with the rest of Europe. However, the Green Party, together with much of the German media and public, had accused such opponents of trying to stifle political discussion about the ethical and social implications of biomedical and biotechnological progress.
