Abstract This research note records the most recent Chinese figures for the population of Tibet, together with the official explanation for a decline in 1959, compared with the totals announced for 1953 and 1957, followed by a steady increase since 1960. Brief reference is made to political and economic changes which are affecting the composition of population.
