This paper describes Ayurveda, the Hindu medicine traditionally practised in India, and shows how the philosophy behind it can help in understanding the various psychosomatic and stress disorders common to man. Ayurvedic drugs are generally preferred by people living in rural communities, and the physicians are still popular and highly respected. Some proposals for integrating this traditional system with modern medical science are made to enable India to develop total health coverage for rural areas.
