The question of village renewal has become one of general public interest in the Soviet Union, as villages are seen to be in a state not only of social and economic but also cultural change. The standard of rural housing and the nature of villages are described; housing is considered to be inadequate both in number and size of houses; communications are poor. Previous Soviet policies and housing policy are discussed with special reference to plans for future village renewal.
