Canine cystinuria: intestinal and renal amino acid transport

Intestinal transport of cystine and dibasic amino acids was normal in four cystinuric dogs. The mean value of plasma cystine of 6 cystinuric dogs was the same as that for 9 normal dogs. The increase in plasma cystine after the dogs were fed was similar in both groups. Thus the abnormal urinary excretion of cystine in this condition is probably due to a defect in renal tubular reabsorption. The renal tubule may have two distinct transport systems for cystine, one of which is absent in dogs with cystinuria.
