Women in a postnatal ward in Ahmedabad were interviewed, with questionnaire, and 410 completed the study. Most gave the first feed within 12 h of parturition, usually when the baby cried. The first feed was most frequently of boiled water, the next most frequent was sweet carbohydrate mixture then milk or breast feeding. Nine sweet mixtures were listed, mostly based on honey or jaggery. Those were offered on a finger or cotton plug and usually left all day exposed to flies.
