General approaches to reducing the birth rate are popularizing the adoption of family planning methods, stimulating social changes affecting fertility, and accelerating basic economic changes so as to increase per capita income. The contraceptive methods generally used in India are the IUD, sterilization, and other contraceptives especially the condom. Tables detail the progress of IUD insertions and the sterilization program; the number of sterilizations by sex and year, and the age groups and average number of living children at sterilization, respectively.
