A child welfare centre in London served a very mixed population. Women seen there who had had their first baby between January 1965 and July 1968 numbered 584, of whom 240 breast fed. The duration of breast feeding was less than 5 weeks in 43, 5 weeks to 3 months in 141, 3 to 6 months in 36 and over 6 months in 20.
