In 1983 the Government of Kenya requested funding for a progamme that would encourage non-governmental organizations to add family planning services to already existing health facilities. Emphasis was placed on the placed on the private, large employer. The team that was to implement the Family Planning Private Sector Program (FPPS) began operations in 1984. A total of 30 sub-projects offering a full range of family planning services to populations served by the health facilities of the organization were to be established. These employees were living especially in remote, rural areas. By 1988 contracts had been signed with 30 organizations and over 90 new family planning service delivery points had been opened. The programme and its objectives, operations and activities are described, and case studies are provided of three rural-based projects involving three major employers: Kenya Canners, Nzoia Sugar Company and Chemelil Sugar Company, which illustrate the success of the FPPS.
