Surgery for lung cancer in octogenarians

Twenty-five octogenarians with lung cancer underwent resection: 15 lobectomies, 3 segmentectomies, and 7 wedge resections. There were two operative deaths (8%) and one hospital death (4%). The complication rate was 26%. All complications occurred in cases with lobectomies. The cumulative 5-year survival rate was 47.4%, 57% for patients for curative and relative non-curative surgery, and 0% for absolute non-curative surgery. It is considered that limited operation for lung cancer in octogenarians is acceptable.
