An article discussing ocular manifestations of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome, including herpes zoster ophthalmicus, tumours of the periocular tissues, HIV-associated retinopathy, opportunistic infections of the retina and the choroid, lesions (not associated with opportunistic infections) that occur in the earlier stages of posterior segment involvement of the eye and lesions from an opportunistic infection (cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection) is presented. Treatment of CMV retinitis using antiviral drugs such as ganciclovir, forscanet and cidofovir are discussed.
