A study is described in which the extent of zinc deficiency was assessed in 60 children, under 5 years old, with PEM and the outcome of zinc supplementation in weight and height gain evaluated. Serum zinc was very low in those with PEM. Serum zinc increased remarkably in zinc supplemented children (2 mg Zn/kg for 3 months in addition to improved energy and protein intake). Zinc supplemented children improved in anthropometric parameters especially height.
