A letter comments on an article in the April 14 issue by Jocelyn Kaiser on the report by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) on the proposed Environmental Protection Agency policy for regulating recombinant DNA. The letter states that the NAS report possesses several flaws, which include internal inconsistency and conflict with previous NAS reports and reports by other prominent scientific groups. It suggests that at least part of the NAS problem stemmed from the composition of the committee. Finally, the letter notes that the most consequential result of the report will be to promote unwarranted regulatory barriers to much-needed pest control strategies.
