What hopes for GM food?

The question of whether genetically modified (GM) food has a future in Europe is addressed. Following on from a unanimous verdict by a U.K. jury that GM crop destruction by Greenpeace can be lawful and the export last May by Advanta Seeds of Canada of GM oilseed-rape seeds to the U.K. and Sweden, the question is asked "Is there hope for those who..adopt an open-minded attitude to the scientific assessment of this technology..?" Europe's public is still potentially accepting of GM crops, but stricter regulatory precautions are required in addition to better public presentation. In this way, standards may be better controlled than has been the case in the U.S. and Canada.
