In a five-year-period 5003 women were followed-up during the use of oral contraceptives of combined types, of whom 114 had developed complications (2,28%). Low doses of oral contraceptives were applied in the majority of cases. However, norgestrel-ethinyloestradiol preparations were given earlier. The following complications were observed: hypertension, hepatobiliary disturbances and ECG changes (41, 35.9 and 19.2 per cent); increase of body weight (9.6 per cent) and impaired glucose tolerance test in 7.8 per cent of cases. Because of different reasons 57 women have stopped using oral contraceptives (1.1 per cent). There were no other vascular or fatal complications. In the authors' opinion oral contraceptive agents should be considered as the first and primordial kind of contraception today, but must be under constant medical control. The manifestation of complications does not represent a particular problem in such circumstances. Decision whether to stop or to continue oral contraception must be made by the gynaecologist and medical doctors, and it should always be under constant medical follow-up.
