This study examines the communications patterns among adopters and non-adopters of family planning methods in West Bengal, the role of mass media and interpersonal communications, and the effectiveness of communication channels. It is shown that mass media are more effective in disseminating ideas regarding the Family Planning programme, while interpersonal communication is more effective for diffusion of knowledge of actual methods. It appears that if the economic level of an individual is high, this seems to make the person reluctant to use contraception.
