In this issue, Shiels et al. provide more evidence that medical nutrition therapy (MNT) can produce cost savings in health care. The authors conclude that, had coverage of MNT been introduced in Part B of Medicare in 1998, savings made through reduced hospital spending and reduced physician visits would have exceeded the costs of introduction by 2001. These are the sort of sound data that the American Dietetic Association needs in its ongoing campaign to persuade policy makers of the benefits of MNT.
