The method used a spectrometer equipped with a direct-inlet system. Adducts of ergocalciferol or cholecalciferol with tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) were used, one as analytical form and the other as internal standard. The optimum amount of vitamin was 50 to 100 mu g and the method required 5 to 6 h instead of 2 days for older methods. The structure of the ergocalciferol-TCNE adduct, primarily a mixture of 2 compounds, was studied.
