Four letters comment on Amy L. Fairchild and Ronald Bayer's discussion of the Tuskegee syphilis experiment, which appeared in the May 7 issue. The writer of the first letter maintains that this appropriately denounced experiment would not have been possible without the help of African-American physicians, nurses, and community workers at Tuskegee Institute. The writer of the second letter expresses concern that researchers' goals may become separated from the population they are attempting to help. The writers of the other two letters, who criticized an Alaskan needle exchange program in its similarity to the Tuskegee study, defend their positions. A response is included.
