In the wheat breeding programme, emphasis is placed on selection for resistance to Puccinia graminis, good bread-baking quality and wide adaptability. The various stages of the breeding programme are listed and briefly described. The research on barley, oats and triticale is mainly the screening of introduced lines and varieties. In 1972, a six-parent diallel was made with the aim of improving the barley varieties Proctor and Zephyr.
