Iatrogenic retained foreign body in the maxillary sinus

The Caldwell-Luc procedure still offer maximal exposure for the removal of foreign body and the concomitant inflammatory tissue often found surrounding these foreign substances. We report a case of retained packed gauze in the left maxillary sinus following a Caldwell-Luc operation. The post operative Computerized Tomography scan showed calcified density with marginal thinning of its density and irregularities of the margin, with rarefied lucencies in the center, and an increase of the surrounding soft tissue which totally filled the remaining space of the left antrum. In the Outpatient Department, under topical nasal anesthesia using an Endoscope, the gauze was found and removed. The patient recovery was uneventful under antibiotic coverage.
