Within the past few years, increasing evidence has suggested that sticky bacterial conglomerations called biofilms cause a range of medical problems. Biofilms were previously recognized mostly for their ability to coat and corrode pipes. Infectious disease specialists at the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention believe that 65 percent of human bacterial infections involve biofilms. The National Institutes of Health will soon award the first grants in a new coordinated biofilm program involving 8 of its 23 institutes.
