Strontium-87m was used as a tracer to study the contribution of the epiphyses of the lower extremity to skeletal growth in the rat. The use of this relatively short half-life isotope facilitates handling of radioactive tracer material and permits safe studies in growing animals. The study demonstrated that there is a variation in the metabolic activity of the different epiphyses with respect to time. There also was variation in the activity of each epiphysis with respect to the distal femoral epiphysis.
