How stimulant drugs may calm hyperactivity

In this issue, researchers at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, offer a reason to explain why stimulant drugs calm hyperactivity. In mice, treatment with psychostimulants, including methylphenidate, relieves symptoms similar to those of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Low doses of the drugs may elevate the concentrations of the neurotransmitter serotonin, known to have calming effects. The findings are discussed.
