Oral contraceptives are of 3 kinds: 1) pills containing a combination of estrogen-progestogen; 2) a pill cycle made up of daily doses of first estrogen, then progestogen; and 3) pills containing only progestogen. Prescription of a specific oral contraceptive should be made by matching the patient's premedication endocrine profile with expected side effects of each medication. A chart is given of side effects caused by: estrogen excess and deficiency and progesteron excess and deficiency. Adjustment of the estrogen/progestogen balance or dosage of the medication should correct the side effects.
