Problems of our population trends and the abortion law in practice

The population index in Czechoslovakia is at the moment between 2.3-2.6 children per family. in the regulation of the number of children per family, above all the woman and society should be considered. A woman should have the right to determine the time and the number of pregnancies. Sterilization of women with many children is most often welcomed by them, since they themselves do not want more children but find contraceptives insufficient. In Czechoslovakia, a woman older than 35 with 2 children has no problem obtaining an abortion should she again become pregnant. However, she cannot be granted a sterilization. This law should be revised since many women obviously have no desire to have more children and there is no sense requiring them to use contraceptives until menopause. It is also worth mentioning that it might be appropriate to suggest sterilization to persons with mental or genetic disorders after they have had 1 or 2 children. Otherwise, since these groups of people tend to have an excessive number of children, it could happen that 1 of every 4 or 5 persons in a city like Prague or Bratislava would have a mental or genetic disorder.
