Early work on mechanisms of bacterial pathogenicity dealt mainly with toxins, witness the early successes of Roux and von Behring with diphteria and tetanus. However, Bail described « aggressins » as non-toxic products enabling bacteria to grow in vivo, while later Torikata put forward the idea of « impedins », substances which though not overtly toxic impede the action of defence mechanisms. As we learn more and more about the details of host defenses, it becomes evident that at least some bacteria have found a way of avoiding or impeding every step.
