The postnatal development of the interscapular brown adipose tissue of the rat can be divided into 2 phases. The first, which lasts up to about the 20th day after birth, is characterized chiefly by growth of the total substance of the brown fat. In the second phase, after the 20th day, growth stops and a simultaneous change takes place in a number of the basic components of the tissue. The water content diminishes, the DNA:protein and RNA:protein ratios fall and the amounts of neutral lipids increase.
