Social science research on integrated rural development in South East Asia

This paper reviews some of the rural development programmes at present in operation in South East Asia. The differences in the nature and conduct of such programmes e.g. The Saemaul Wundung in Korea, or Desa in Indonesia, or Accelerated Rural Development Programme of Thailand are outlined. The second part of the paper attempts to provide a framework for classifying various problems and issues in integrated rural development in order to allow for evaluative research programmes. Such problems of identification and selections of projects flounder because the linkages in processes of change are often obscure. To these general considerations and those of how to direct research in integrated projects, the bulk of the article is directed.
