Renal artery stenosis is mainly due to atherosclerosis, but also to fibromuscular dysplasia. Treatment can consist either of angioplasty (+/- stent) or of surgical revascularization. Hypertension induced by atherosclerotic disease is rarely cured, but more easily controlled. The renal function is often improved and thus this disease must be searched in the presence of renal insufficiency of unknown cause or refractory hypertension.
