In spite of education, prevention, and treatment, the incidence of HIV remains steady. Efforts to prevent infection have saved many lives, just as new combination drug therapies have postponed death for many. In fact, deaths from AIDS have recently decreased, partially as a result of more effective treatments. Nonetheless, new infections continue to rise in many sectors of the American population and in most segments of developing nations. The writer examines whether HIV prevention works and how U.S. efforts to prevent AIDS compare to those of other nations.
