Seasonal migration of the Mafas, a mountain people of North Cameroon: a solution to overpopulation and a decrease in permanent out-migration

An attempt to counter the overpopulation of the Mandara Mountains (Cameroon) which involves complementary solutions is presented. The first part of the solution aims to reduce overpopulation in mountainous zones through organized out-migration to new resettlement in rural areas. The second part has been initiated by the local populations: the strategy is to delay definitive out-migration by using the cities, towns and countryside as economic areas to complement the mountainous areas. This is manifest in seasonal migration to bring in revenue whilst maintaining subsistence in the mountains.
