U.S. health officials recently agreed to allow limited clinical trials of animal-to-human transplantation, or xenotransplantation. Officials from the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institutes of Health have outlined plans to allow this research to proceed under strict safeguards that are currently being devised. These institutions intend to impose rigorous standards to maintain disease-free donor animals, establish a national registry of organ recipients, create a tissue bank of samples from donor animals and recipients, and set up a national policy advisory committee.
