The Tanzanian villagization policy: implementational lessons and ecological dimensions

Expansion of agriculture is the focus of Tanzania's development effort. The ujamaa policy is the practical expression of Tanzania's agricultural strategy. This article examines the ujamaa policy in its historical context and examines the policy's new features and its links with the past. Traditional agricultural practices and land tenure are discussed. The ujamaa policy has implications for man/land relationships. The creation of ujamaa villages involves difficult to control new ecological situations.
