Biomedical groups derail fast-track anticloning bill

Biomedical groups recently managed to derail anticloning legislation that was regarded as a sure thing by the Republican leadership. The bill would have outlawed the human application of the technology used last year to make Dolly the sheep, a populist move and one backed by Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott. However, using lobbying tactics that would have made the most seasoned Washington insider proud, scientific societies, industry organizations, patient advocacy groups, and 27 Nobel laureates managed to win over enough senators to postpone a vote and at least derail the fast-track bill for the time being.
