Yeasts were cultured from 193 of 1668 swabs (11.6%) taken from 169 of 775 (21.8%) women between the 1st and 83rd cycle of treatment with various hormonal contraceptives. In a control group of fertile women yeasts were present in 185 of 1367 swabs (13.5%) from 185 of 1042 (18.7%) women. The occurrence of yeasts in the vagina of treated women did not reach the proportion encountered in pregnant ones, and the authors conclude that long term hormonal contraceptive treatment is not a predisposing factor for yeast vaginal mycosis.
