In this issue, Kramer and colleagues report for the first time that a receptor antagonist for one of the best-known neuropeptides, substance P, may be useful in the treatment of moderate to severe major depressive disorder (MDD). The NK1 antagonist, MK-869, was found to be safe and well tolerated in clinical trials carried out at four sites, and its efficacy in MDD at the single dose studied was comparable to that of the serotonin uptake inhibitor paroxetine.
