In this issue, C. Rosenmund and colleagues propose that the ionotropic glutamate receptor channels in the postsynaptic membrane of vertebrate nerve cells are tetramers of independent subunits. Many other neurotransmitter-activated ion channels are known to be composed of five identical or similar subunits surrounding a central transmembrane pore. The researchers concede that their conclusion is based on a very simplistic representation of ligand binding.
