Senate panel backs large NIH increase

The Senate Budget Committee recently called for an 11 percent increase in funding for the National Institutes of Health and voiced its support for basic research at a number of other agencies. The resolution offers an outline of how appropriators should allocate their funding and is a first step in a difficult process leading to agency budgets in the fall. Simultaneously, the White House is trying to win over the scientific community in the rancorous debate over the use of money from the tobacco industry to fund some of its proposed increases in RandD. In addition, there is some unease about the favored budget status of the National Institutes of Health.
