Human infection by Microsporum nanum in Brazil

M. nanum was isolated from lesions on the right leg and both knees of a 16-yr-old white boy. The lesion on the leg had been present for 6 months and was annular with an erythematous border and a clear centre; those on the knees had been present for 3 yr and were hyperkeratotic erythematous and scaling, with crusting, vesicular borders. The boy lived on a farm and had handled pigs. Two young pigs on the farm had crusty lesions but no dermatophyte was isolated. Soil samples were also negative for M. nanum but all yielded M. gypseum. Trichophyton ajelloi and M. cookei were also isolated.
