Birth weight and the advancement of the dental caries in teenagers

The aim of the present study was an attempt to determine the dependency between the advancement of the carious process and the birth weight of the subjects and also the advancement of enamel hypoplasia and the birth weigh. The subjects of the examination were 141 first class secondary school pupils (71 girls and 70 boys). Clinical and questionnaire tests and a statistical analysis were carried out. The obtained results and literature review seem to allow for the following conclusions: there is a relationship between the advancement of the carious process and the birth weight of the subjects; birth weight, gestational age, mother's diet and mineral--vitamin supplementation are important factors in dental maturation.
