The Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Sciences recently recruited the JASON organization, a group primarily made up of physical and information scientists, to review the department's component of the U.S. Human Genome Project (HGP). The HGP is a joint effort of the DOE and the National Institutes of Health that was formally inaugurated in 1990 with the stated aim of characterizing all human genetic material genome, discovering all of the over 50,000 human genes, and making them accessible for further biological study. The JASON group's findings and recommendations in the areas of technology, quality assurance, and quality control are summarized.
