A study was made of the tw18 gene, one of 5 recessive lethal alleles at the T locus in linkage group IX. The malignant potential of the genetically abnormal tw18/tw18 embryos was investigated by transplanting them into adult testes. 15 out of 46 eight-day tw18/tw18 embryos, when grafted for more than or equal to 28 days, produced histologically malignant growths, while grafts of their normal littermates all became benign teratomas. The behaviour of tw18/tw18 8-day embryos in cell culture is described, and data are given on the occurrence of spontaneous neoplasms in stocks carrying T-locus alleles.o.
