A letter responds to the March 13 report by Michael P. Kilgard and Michael M. Merzenich on the ability of nucleus basalis activity to reorganize the cortical map. The writers call attention to an earlier study demonstrating that paired activation of the nucleus basalis is sufficient to induce specific receptive field changes in the auditory cortex. Kilgard and Merzenich reply.
