Efforts by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) mean that the discovery of more single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) is on the way. Late in 1997, the NCI launched a project to find these genome markers to use in tracking down the hundreds of genes believed to affect cancer risk. Instead of creating a genomewide map of anonymous SNPs, says NCI geneticist Ken Buetow, who oversees the NCI's Genetic Annotation Initiative, the search will focus on SNPs in the coding regions and in the sequences at both ends of several thousand genes suspected of contributing to cancer susceptibility or resistance.
