Two letters comment on John Bongaarts's discussion of global demographic trends, which appeared in the October 16 issue. The writer of the first letter argues that wealthy nations can redress the modest population declines that appear imminent over the next century by relaxing immigration rules to increase opportunities for the best-educated and most diligent aspirants from the Third World. The second writer discusses the reasons behind the dramatic population declines reported in the UN's recent 1998 Revision: World Population Estimates and Projections.
